Over the course of three years, 2007 – 2009, designated stations conducted SUPER WHY Reading Camps in collaboration with local partners such as those already serving at-risk children in low-income neighborhoods. Extending the series’ signature educational approach into the community, the SUPER WHY Reading Camps stimulated literacy/reading readiness for 4- to 6-year-old children and created a real-life interactive storybook adventure. The camps were managed by Outreach Extensions in association with Out of the Blue, the series’ creators.
- 2007: 5 Ready To Learn test sites that demonstrated that the SUPER WHY Reading Camps successfully built children’s literacy skills.
- 2008: Based on the success of the 2007 test sites, a larger roll-out of the Reading Camps engaged 19 PBS KIDS Raising Readers stations and 33 camps.
- 2009: Number of stations and camps TBD.
- To help launch the series, two rounds of station grants (2007 Launch grants and 2008 Big Event grants) directly engaged young children and their families through high impact community events with hands-on literacy activities.
